Carnival (end of February). Maastricht is the place to be during the carnival festivities. It’s one big party, with people in their “pekskes” (carnival costumes) dancing in the streets, overcrowded cafes, music everywhere and non-stop beer! During these days, Maastricht is ruled by Prince Carnival.Many streets and houses are nicely decorated and the carnival flag in red-yellow-green colours is visible everywhere in the city.
The festivities are initiated with running up the flag-pole of the “het mooswief” (greengrocerwoman) and the firing of the canon on the Vrijthof. After that there is the grand procession followed by a three day party!
